Sorry Day

As part of Reconciliation Week, Mr Went, Albert and Mrs Priday were joined by a handful of Patricks Road students at the Teralba Park Sorry Day ceremony. It was a moving ceremony to remember the mistreatment of our First Nations people, to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and to reflect on how we can all share in the healing process.

Year 3 students have recently read a book called 'Stolen Girl' by Trina Saffioti. The book tells the story of an Australian Aboriginal girl who was taken from her family by the government and sent to a children's home. The students then wrote letters to request that our school commemorates Sorry Day in future years.

5C science experiments

Year 5 have been experimenting with light and learning about how light moves through spaces and can be reflected. Students created a maze in a shoe box and then tested their experiments, trialling different arrangements to test their theories.

Booklists return to PRSS

Booklists

As of 2024, we will be returning to a booklist for all students in Years 1 - 6. Updates to the Student Resource Scheme policy have made continuing to use this scheme, impractical for our school.

What does this mean for families?

Later in the year, the school will send home booklists for students entering into Years 1 to 6 in 2024. The booklist outlines most of the items each child needs for the year. You can then choose one of the options below:

  • Tick that you would like to order all items indicated on the booklist, pay for it, and the company then delivers it all to your home.
  • Tick selected items from the booklist and pay for those selected items and have them delivered to your door. Shop for other items individually.
  • Find another provider/s to source all of the items on the booklist. If this is your choice, please ensure they are providing quality.

You will be responsible for labelling / covering your child's booklist items.

Please note that some items cannot be supplied through a booklist. A costing will be supplied in the term newsletter for these.

Dance Celebrations - Prep, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 6 students

This term students in Prep, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 6 are participating in Dance lessons every Wednesday or Thursday.  Students in these year levels will learn two choreographed dances, that they will perform in front of family and friends in the last week of term.

The performances will be held in the school hall on Wednesday 21st June at the following times:

Year 3: 1:40pm - 2:00pm, Year 2: 2:00pm - 2:20pm,  Prep: 2:20pm -2:40pm, Year 6: 2:40pm - 3:00pm

PREP 2024

Have you got a child starting Prep next year?

If yes, have you filled out an Expression of Interest form from the office?

If you are in our school catchment area, have you also picked up a Prep enrolment pack for your child and booked an enrolment meeting time?

We are currently processing our Prep enrolments for next year and have started out enrolment meetings with in-catchment families.  Getting your child's completed Expression of Interest/Enrolment form in early, ensures you will be added to our email list for communications pertaining to Prep for 2024.

Appropriate Technology Use

Every family is different, and will have their own ideas around what’s considered ‘normal’ or acceptable use of digital devices. Technology is everywhere in our homes and parents and carers play an important role in helping children to develop digital intelligence — the social, emotional and practical skills needed to successfully navigate the digital world.

Please ensure you make the time to check in with your children and ensure appropriate security settings are in place. Managing the way your children use digital devices at home is to ensure you are informed and have developed some rules of your own. Check out the following resources and information available - https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

Digital Technology Guidelines for Parents

1. Know what the rules and expectations are at school

Our school digital device policy and guidelines make a great starting point for families. Make sure that you and your child know what the rules are at school. Importantly, support the school and keep your own expectations in line with the schools.

2. Specify hours for digital use

Set the ground rules for when your children can use their devices, and when they need to shut them off. It’s just a smart way to build a habit for the whole family so it becomes ingrained and just the way things are done in your home.

3. Consider a digital device ‘contract’

Clearly set out your digital device usage guidelines, and print them in an agreement that you and your children can both sign. If there are any disputes, then you both have the expectations in writing. The goal is to set clear boundaries. You can develop the guidelines together and they should be reasonable rather than excessive.

4. Talk about respectful relationships, safety and inappropriate websites

Do not let your children loose in the digital world without having several conversations about how to stay safe online, how to show respectful behaviour and be aware of inappropriate websites. Each of these topics is a separate issue on its own, but each is deeply affected by the virtual, boundary-free nature of digital technology.

5. Change the rules if necessary

Be prepared to keep evolving your rules based on your children’s behaviour, maturity, sleep habits, their tendency to leave homework or chores unfinished, bullying or any number of issues that will invariably crop up to ensure they are clear around your expectations.

6. Keep digital devices out of the bedroom

This is one rule that you should stay firm on.

7. Have a ‘digital detox’ one day a week

The only way that this idea will work is if you join them in making one day a week a digital device-free day. They will probably not like it, and neither will you, but the point of having one day off is to prove that they can live without their digital device, and involve them in different forms of communication and entertainment.

Containers4change

Our year 6 students are currently in the midst of planning an upgrade for the year 6 eating area. In the very near future, we hope to add a basketball half court, decking around the tree and some sandstone blocks.

For this to happen, we need funds and so we are collecting eligible bottles, cans and poppers through 'containers4change'. We have equipped our students with bags and over the last 2 weeks they have brought 24 FULL bags of eligible containers for our collection.

If you can help by donating eligible bottles, cans and poppers, please gather a collection and bring them to the senior undercover eating area before school any day. We would be so grateful!

We also have a SCHEME ID (see attached flyer) if you'd prefer to drop them at one of the  'Containers4Change' drop off points - the closest being at Arana Plaza.

Thanks for helping our school and the environment!

Senior Athletics Carnival

This year our Senior Athletics Carnival will be held at Arana Little Athletics (Leslie Patrick Park) on Tuesday 20 June. Thursday 22 June has been set aside as a back up day, in case of wet weather.

Students will have their names marked off their class roll at 8:30am and the first event will commence at 8:45am, with the day finishing at 3pm. Supervision of students by admin staff, in their designated class groups, will commence from 8:15am. There will be an administration tent set up for first aid and for students to sign in, if they arrive after rolls have been marked.  Parents who take their children home early from the carnival, will need to sign their children out at this tent as well.

Due to the carnival being held offsite, a consent form for permission to participate in the Senior Athletics Carnival has been uploaded to QParents for all students in Years 3 to 6.  Please complete this online consent form to give your child permission to attend the carnival.  If your child will not be attending, please select DO NO CONSENT and this will indicate that your child will not be in attendance on the day.

We are looking for parent helpers to help set up on the day with setting Sports House Marquees and equipment for events. (we are aiming to start setting up at 7:00 - 7:30am). Also, if you would like to help with officiating and running of the events on the day, we would really appreciate your help. Please contact Mr Rogers via email (droge13@eq.edu.au) if you are available.

All children are required to be dropped off and picked up from Leslie Patrick Park Arana Hills by parents/guardians for an 8:30am start. If your child attends OSHC on this day and you are unable to drop them at Leslie Patrick Park or pick them up, please contact the school office on (07) 3872 1888 to organise transport to and from the venue.

The “Pats Gift” race (Fastest 100m runner from each age group), and medal presentations will be held on Friday 23 June (The last day of Term 2). Times and further details will be sent out at a later date.
